Bulk density (ρb) or wet density is the bulk or wet mass of soil per unit volume. The bulk density is usually expressed as either g/cm3 or t/m3, which are alike. Also see dry density.

Equations[edit]

The following equation can be used to determine the bulk density (wet density) of a soil or solid bulk cargo:

Where:

ρb = bulk density (t/m3 or g/cm3),
Wt = total wet or bulk weight of material,
Vt = total volume,
S = degree of saturation (%),
ρst = specific gravity or particle density (t/m3 or g/cm3) and
e = void ratio.
