Components of a soil or material to calculate the gravimetric and volumetric water contents.

On this wiki Va is a mathematical abbreviation for volume of air.

Uses[edit]

One use for the volume of air is used to calculate the Volumetric Water Content, θ, of a soil or cargo.

Equations[edit]

The following equation can be used to determine the volume of air of a soil or solid bulk cargo:

Where:

Va = volume of air,
ρd = dry density (t/m3 or g/cm3),
ρst = specific gravity or particle density (t/m3 or g/cm3) and
w = net water content by weight (%).
