The following is a list of common terms used on this wiki:

Term Meaning
Bulk Density (ρb) Wet weight of soil per unit volume of soil.
Cargo Peak Maximum height of cargo after loading.
Degree of Saturation (S) The ratio of water to the total volume of voids in a material.
Dry Bulk Density (ρd) Dry weight of soil per unit volume of soil (Dry Density).
Dry Density (ρd) Dry weight of soil per unit volume of soil.
Gross Water Content (w1) The quantity of water contained in a material expressed in terms of wet mass. Can be calculated by volume or by weight.
Moisture Content (MC) Same as Water Content. The quantity of water contained in a material. Can be expressed as gravimetric or volumetric water content.
Net Water Content (w) The quantity of water contained in a material expressed in terms of dry mass. Can be calculated by volume or by weight.
Particle Density (ρst) Same as Specific Gravity. Ratio of the density of a material to the density of water.
Specific Gravity (Gs) Same as Particle Density. Ratio of the density of a material to the density of water.
Water Content Same as Moisture Content (MC). The quantity of water contained in a material. Can be expressed as gravimetric or volumetric water content.
Wet Bulk Density (ρb) Wet weight of soil per unit volume of soil (Bulk Density).
Wet Density (ρb) Wet weight of soil per unit volume of soil (Bulk Density).
