# Degree of Saturation

From TML Testing Wiki

(Redirected from S)

The **Degree of Saturation**, abbreviated as **S**, is the ratio of water to the total volume of voids in a soil. Expressed as a percentage, the **Degree of Saturation** can be determined using the following equation:

Where:

**S**=**Degree of Saturation**(%),- V
_{w}= volume of water, - V
_{a}= volume of air and - V
_{v}= volume of voids.

Determining the **degree of saturation** during the Proctor/Fagerberg Test (PFT), Modified Proctor/Fagerberg Test for Coal and Modified Proctor/Fagerberg Test for Iron Ore Fines can be achieved by using the equation:

Where:

**S**=**Degree of Saturation**(%),- e = void ratio,
- w = net water content by weight (%),
- w
^{1}= gross water content by weight (%) and - ρ
_{st}= is the specific gravity of the sample (in t/m^{3}).
