The Degree of Saturation, abbreviated as S, is the ratio of water to the total volume of voids in a soil. Expressed as a percentage, the Degree of Saturation can be determined using the following equation:

Where:

S = Degree of Saturation (%),
Vw = volume of water,
Va = volume of air and
Vv = volume of voids.

Determining the degree of saturation during the Proctor/Fagerberg Test (PFT), Modified Proctor/Fagerberg Test for Coal and Modified Proctor/Fagerberg Test for Iron Ore Fines can be achieved by using the equation:

Where:

S = Degree of Saturation (%),
e = void ratio,
w = net water content by weight (%),
w1 = gross water content by weight (%) and
ρst = is the specific gravity of the sample (in t/m3).
