# Dry density

From TML Testing Wiki

(Redirected from Dry Density)

**Dry density** (**ρ _{d}**) is the dry mass of soil per unit volume. The

**dry density**is usually expressed as either g/cm

^{3}or t/m

^{3}, which are alike. Also see bulk density.

## Equations[edit]

The following equation can be used to determine the **dry density** of a soil or solid bulk cargo:

Where:

**ρ**=_{d}**dry density**(t/m^{3}or g/cm^{3}),- ρ
_{b}= bulk density (t/m^{3}or g/cm^{3}), - w = net water content by weight (%),
- W
_{s}= weight of solids, - V
_{t}= total volume, - ρ
_{st}= specific gravity or particle density (t/m^{3}or g/cm^{3}) and - e = void ratio.
