Dry density (ρd) is the dry mass of soil per unit volume. The dry density is usually expressed as either g/cm3 or t/m3, which are alike. Also see bulk density.

The following equation can be used to determine the dry density of a soil or solid bulk cargo:

ρd = dry density (t/m3 or g/cm3),
ρb = bulk density (t/m3 or g/cm3),
w = net water content by weight (%),
Ws = weight of solids,
Vt = total volume,
ρst = specific gravity or particle density (t/m3 or g/cm3) and
e = void ratio.
