# Bulk density

From TML Testing Wiki

**Bulk density** (**ρ _{b}**) or

**wet density**is the bulk or wet mass of soil per unit volume. The

**bulk density**is usually expressed as either g/cm

^{3}or t/m

^{3}, which are alike. Also see dry density.

## Equations[edit]

The following equation can be used to determine the **bulk density** (**wet density**) of a soil or solid bulk cargo:

Where:

**ρ**=_{b}**bulk density**(t/m^{3}or g/cm^{3}),- W
_{t}= total wet or bulk weight of material, - V
_{t}= total volume, - S = degree of saturation (%),
- ρ
_{st}= specific gravity or particle density (t/m^{3}or g/cm^{3}) and - e = void ratio.
