Bulk unit weight (γb), wet unit weight or just unit weight is the bulk or wet weight of soil per unit volume. The bulk unit weight is usually expressed as kN/m3. Also see dry unit weight.

Equations[edit]

The following equation can be used to determine the bulk unit weight of a soil or solid bulk cargo:

Where:

γb = bulk unit weight (kN/m3),
g = acceleration due to gravity (~9.81 m/s2),
Wt = total wet or bulk weight of material,
Vt = total volume,
S = degree of saturation (%),
ρst = specific gravity or particle density (t/m3 or g/cm3) and
e = void ratio.
